Why do I need to click a link in an email when I register on a website?

When you register with a website or service, you often need to click on a link sent to you via email. This is a security measure to confirm that the email address you have entered really belongs to you and that you have access to it.

When you click on the link sent to you, you verify your email address and confirm that you are a real user and have access to the email address. This helps prevent unauthorized persons or bots from creating fake accounts on the site and can reduce the risk of fraud, spam or other malicious activity. In addition, the verification confirms that you have indeed spelled your address correctly.

In the background, it works like this:

  • "I claim that this is my identity". When you enter your e-mail during registration, you can only claim that you own the e-mail address.
  • "Then I would probably like to verify it". The website does not know that you own the email address and therefore creates a code, stores it in its database and then sends this code to the email address provided. Most often, the code comes embedded in a link and therefore does not need to be entered manually, e.g. https://bedriva.se/bekfrafta-epostadress?code=abcdefghijklmno
  • "I confirm". You click on the link.
  • "Great, now I know you own the email address". When the website notices that you have called the website with the code that is in the database, the website understands that you are the owner of the email address.
